2019 Available Dates
May 26 - June 2. This is a seven night workshop, ending early on June 2nd.
Come join me for on an exploration of the amazing Canadian island province of Newfoundland! See the above slideshow for sample images from various locations around Newfoundland.
We will explore the rugged coast including HUGE sea cliffs, sea stacks, rocky beaches, mountains, and ICEBERGS!
Newfoundland is home to an amazing culture all its own, the only confirmed settlements of Vikings in North America, incredible coastlines, beautiful backcountry mountain views, amazing lighthouses, puffins, whales, icebergs, and some of the friendliest people you will ever meet! Don't be surprised if a local invites us inside for a swig of screech!
There are a couple different lodging experiences available for this workshop, and the schedule will be tailored to suit what most people would like.
My goal is to make this an ADVENTURE workshop! No strict schedule, we will chase the light, clear night skies, and the Northern Lights if we are so lucky. We will book lodging each night but it won't be planned far in advance, and you may need to nap in your car while we wait for the skies to clear at night, or for the Northern Lights to kick up, etc. Lodging will be either nearby or within an hour or so drive from our shooting locations for the morning/night.
Renting a small RV (class B or "camper van", or truck camper) would be an ideal way to experience Newfoundland! We can offer you information on camper van rentals in Nova Scotia, which you would then need to drive up to Newfoundland via the ferry, or truck camper rentals in Newfoundland.
We will be driving anywhere from 1 - 4 hours or more per day, it will depend on how everyone feels, but we will be covering a lot of ground so BE PREPARED FOR DRIVING! Some days we will stick to a smaller area, others we will need to drive to the next amazing location and that may be a few hours or more away.
This workshop will focus on the west coast and possibly northern coast, depending on conditions.
We will take at least one iceberg boat tour to get up and close with the icebergs that make their annual journey from Greenland past the northern Newfoundland coast. One iceberg boat tour is INCLUDED in your workshop price.
We will spend some time in Gros Morne National park exploring the Tablelands (desert like landscape), the seacoast, and we will walk the trail out to Western Brook Pond where we will take an amazing boat tour around the pond to see the incredible sheer high cliffs and waterfalls of this landlocked fjord. This boat tour is INCLUDED in your workshop price.
We will also visit the amazing sea cliffs of various areas of Newfoundland, and possibly see some puffins.
This workshop REQUIRES A LOT OF DRIVING! Newfoundland is a big place and we will be exploring a good chunk of it. You will need to rent a comfortable vehicle.
This is a landscape photography workshop, with a focus on landscape astrophotography with the Milky Way and Northern Lights as conditions permit. Clear skies are not guaranteed, but these workshops are scheduled around the new moon cycle so that we have moonless dark skies at night. We will also shoot sunrises and sunsets.
You will get an overview of everything I know about landscape photography and astrophotography and I will provide personal attention to each person throughout the class.
- Milky Way photography
- Sunrise & sunset photography
- Long exposure photography
- Focusing for stars in the dark
- White balance, ISO, shutter speed
- Star stacking for pinpoint stars and low noise
- Separate foreground exposures and exposure blending in Photoshop
- Planning shots with PhotoPills (available on the App Store or Google Play)
- Forecasting sunrises and sunsets
- Lightroom & Photoshop editing
The rough schedule starts with a meet-up in or near Deer Lake, the town where the major airport on the western side of the island is located. We will then drive about 2 to 2.5 hours to our first stop for sunset and night photography. We will then take it from there based on the weather. A more detailed rough schedule is given to those who submit a registration for this workshop.
Physical Requirements, Safety & Risks
This is an outdoor nature photo workshop and being in relatively good health is best for the activities we have planned. There will be some hiking involved, maybe 2+ miles depending on conditions, so please be prepared with proper clothing.
Please note that this workshop is often in the dark and often along rocky and dangerous terrain. If you venture out onto rocks at the ocean's edge you acknowledge the risk you're taking. All participants are required to sign a risk of acknowledgement form at the start of the workshop. Adam Woodworth Photography, LLC, is not responsible for any injuries during this workshop.
Training in the field and post-processing training, 1 iceberg boat tour, and 1 Western Brook Pond boat tour.
The price of the workshop does not include lodging, transportation, camera gear, or meals. You are responsible for all of these and will need to rent a vehicle.
These are some recommended night photography lenses from various manufacturers, this list is certainly not complete, and only includes wide angle lenses. We will also shoot sunrise and sunset, so bring your normal landscape lenses, including at least a 200mm lens.
Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8
Canon 16-35mm f/2.8
Sony 16-35mm f/2.8
Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8
Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8
Rokinon (Bower, Samyang) 14mm f/2.8
Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8
Zeiss 12m f/2.8
Rokinon 12mm f/2.8 (not the full frame 12mm f/2.8 fisheye lens)
- Lots of fully charged batteries! Bring as many as you can. Don't forget the charger!
- At least a couple 16GB or larger flash memory cards
- Sturdy tripod
- Remote shutter release with timer and extra batteries, preferably one with a programmable timer
- Lens warmer keeping your lens fog-free at night - I will have enough available to loan to everyone if you don't have your own, I use this Protage Lens Heater with this Anker battery.
- Headlamp with a red LED mode. Your headlamp MUST have a red LED mode on it to limit the amount of light that will get into the shots of other workshop participants and to help preserve your night vision. One like this Black Diamond Spot works very well.
- Laptop for editing your photos. You MUST have up to date versions of Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop CC installed. PLEASE NOTE: Lightroom CC is NOT THE SAME AS Lightroom Classic CC.
- PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR LAPTOP IS MODERN! OLD COMPUTERS WILL NOT WORK!
- Additional headlamp and/or flashlight and batteries
- External backup harddrive - I'd hate for you to lose your photos because your memory card dies or your computer crashes! I recommend making backups of your photos.
- Warm clothing - it can get very cold on the seacoast at night even in the summer!
- Proper footwear - good grip and waterproof
- Food & water - bring plenty to get you through the night
- Things to keep you comfortable in the outdoors - bug spray, chair, blanket, etc
Getting to Newfoundland
If you fly to Newfoundland you will want to land at Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF). You can get to Deer Lake with just 1 stop in Toronto from most major US airports.
You can also drive to Newfoundland by taking the ferry from North Sydney, Nova Scotia. The ferry is a huge cruise-ship style ferry that can fit any large vehicle. The crossing to Port aux Basque (Western Newfoundland) is about 7 hours, and Argentia (Eastern Newfoundland) is somewhere around 16 hours. The ferry has comfortable chairs, or you can book a private cabin with beds and your own shower.
You must provide your own transportation. We can provide you with details for car rentals from Deer Lake airport. We recommend an SUV like a Toyota Rav4 or Highlander.
This is a "chase the light" style workshop and we will play it by ear. Please be prepared to nap in your car on some nights as we wait for the skies to clear, etc. We will always book lodging but we won't have it booked far in advance, and it may or may not be near our shooting spots.
Alternatively you may sleep in your car or camp at campgrounds, it's up to you! I will be traveling in my camper van, and you can rent one from Nova Scotia.
It would be a good idea to have a sleeping bag and sleeping pad for your car in case we need to wait out the clouds before we can shoot the stars. If you can't bring your own let me know and I can help facilitate renting both a bag and pad in Newfoundland.
For those of you car camping a lot there will be showers available at almost any campground either for free or a small fee. Bathrooms are available at many of the parks we will visit or sleep at.
Tuition & Cancellation Policy
The full tuition cost for this workshop is $2450.
A non-refundable deposit of $500 per person is required to secure a space on this workshop. In the event you have to cancel your spot, $250 of the deposit may be used towards a future workshop date at the discretion of Adam Woodworth Photography, LLC.
Full tuition ($1950 balance payment) is due by February 26, 2019, which is 90 days before the workshop starts.
Within 90 days of the workshop start date there are no refunds of any amount unless I can fill your spot. In the event I can fill your spot you will get a refund on your balance payment less a $200 cancellation fee.
If your balance payment is not made by 90 days before the workshop start date and I cannot contact you after repeated attempts then your spot will be forfeited and given to the next person on the waiting list.
In the event that circumstances beyond my control force me to cancel the workshop completely, there will be 100% full refunds given. But Adam Woodworth Photography, LLC, is not responsible for any non-refundable airline tickets, lodging, car rentals, or other travel fees that you may have purchased before the cancellation of the workshop. I strongly consider getting refundable airline tickets and travel insurance to cover such losses in the event of a workshop cancellation and you decide not to go on your planned trip.
Night photography depends on clear skies, but sadly that is beyond my control! We will try our best to shoot every night of the workshop. However, I cannot offer refunds if the weather prevents us from seeing the stars at all. But I can tell you that you will come away with lots of knowledge for shooting and editing landscape astrophotography images! We will also shoot sunrises and sunsets as conditions permit.
Please fill out the form below to request your spot in the workshop. I'll check your equipment list to see if it will work for the workshop and I'll e-mail you back with a request to briefly chat on the phone. This is an intense workshop so I want to make sure you're prepared!
You must be 18 years of age or older. By filling out this form you acknowledge that you understand the weather and cancellation policies.
NOTE: Due to Canadian regulations, this workshop is unfortunately not available to Canadian citizens.
